Hammond forwards to the Colonial Office a copy of a despatch from Her Majesty’s Consul at
San Francisco “reporting the departure of Emigrants and Merchandize” [sic] heading for the Fraser River.

Enclosed is Booker to Malmesbury advising that twenty-eight vessels with cargoes valued at £84,000 had left for Victoria in the past month, and about 24,000 people thus far for the year.

Sir,
I am directed by the Earl of Malmesbury to transmit to you,
for the information of Secretary Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, a
copy of a despatch from Her Majesty's Consul at San Francisco,
reporting the departure of Emigrants and Merchandize for Fraser River.
Minutes by CO staff
24000 Emigrants had left S. Francisco by 19 Aug and 2000
returned.
