Hawes informs the CO that in regards to the prospective Bishop of British Columbia’s request for a military chaplain the War Office has not found “any grounds for modifying
the opinion expressed.”
The minutes “communicate” the War Office’s decision, ostensibly that no military chaplain
would be appointed, with Lytton’s regret.

With reference to your letter of the 2nd

transmitting for the consideration of the Secretary of State for War, the
copy of a Letter from the Bishop Designate of British Columbia proposing
that a Military Chaplain should be sent out to that Colony: I am
directed by Secretary Major General Peel to acquaint you
that having carefullyreconsidered
reconsidered the question, he is unable
to find any grounds for modifying the opinion expressed in
the letter from this Office of the 12 August
last.
