Moody to Merivale (Permanent Under-Secretary)
4 New St Spring Gardens
28th September 1858
Sir,
I have the honor to state, it would be of very great advantage
to the Service and a material saving in expense if the Secretary
of State would be pleased to authorize Twelve Months more Rations
being supplied from Admiralty Stores at Deptford at the same rate
(in quantities) as before but substituting Flour entirely for Biscuit.
The above to be shipped on board the "
Briseis" now in the
London Docks.
I have the honor to be Sir
Your obedient humble Servant
R.C. Moody
Col. R.E.

There is no end to applications for this Force. It will be a great
relief when it is gone. If it would really be a saving of expense
to order 12 months more rations—which I can readily conceive will
be the case—& if there is the room in the
Briseis, I think it
would be good policy to say "yes" to this application & write acc
ly
to the War Office.
It will I suppose swell our next years estimates but I agree that
it will be advisable. Annex draft
wh can then be passed by
Sir E. Lytton.

Draft, Colonial Office to War Department, 30 September 1858,
recommending compliance with the suggestion.
