Lytton wishes Douglas to inform Chartres Brew that the CO has received his account of the “Austria” disaster and have granted him a sum of £100 as a reimbursement “for the losses he
has sustained.”

Sir,
I have to acquaint you that I have received from Mr Brew, the
Chief Commissioner of Police in British Columbia, a letter dated Halifax
Nova Scotia, 27th Septr 1858,

reporting his arrival in that Colony after
escaping from the Steamer "Austria", destroyed by fire on the voyage to
New York; and that the Lieut. Governor of theProvince

me that an advance of £100 has been made to Mr Brew from the Colonial
Treasury to enable him to continue his journey to British Columbia.

with much regret the account of the disaster which he encountered in
proceeding to assume his duties in British Columbia, and that you will acquaint him that under the peculiar circumstances of the case,

The Lords Commissioners of the Treasury have accordingly repaid the
advance of £100 to the Treasury of Nova Scotia, and charged the amount
to the account of advances made from the Treasury Chest for the service
of British Columbia.
