I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of Your
Grace's Despatch N
o 29 of the
3rd of June
and
and I feel
much gratified with Your Grace's appreciation of my remarks
respecting the management of the
North Western Territories
of British North America.
2. In reply to your question regarding the Map I forwarded,
I beg to acquaint your Grace that I did not define the
Boundary of the Hudson Bay Companys Territory from any
Authority,
but
but I drew the line merely from my own recollections
of the extent over which the rights of the Hudson Bay Company
been
practically asserted under its original Charter.
I was aware that the tract I enclosed was more limited
than that granted by the Charter, but the Hudson Bay Company
really enjoyed the exclusive right of trade
only
only within that
line, for the North West Company had Fur Trading Posts
scattered over every other part of the Indian Country.
