Sir,
With reference to your letter of the 5th instant intimating the wish of the Duke of Newcastle that Captain Lempriere R.E. should, in consequence of his promotion, be withdrawn from British Columbia, and suggesting that the vacancy occasioned among the Subalterns of the Party of Royal Engineers in the Colony should not be filled up: I Manuscript image I am directed by Mr Secretary Herbert to transmit to you, for the information of His Grace, the enclosed copy of a letter received from the Horse Guards, stating that the General Commanding in Chief sees no objection to this proposal. Captain Lempriere will be recalled accordingly.
I am to add that the date of this Officer's promotion to the rank of 2nd Captain is the Manuscript image the 20th June 1859.
