I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 24th Instant in which you state that the Duke of Newcastle proposes to appoint Captain Luard RE to be Commissioner of Lands and Surveyor General of British Columbia.

In reply I am to request that you will inform His Grace that Earl de Grey, having communicated with His Royal Highness the Field Marshal Commanding in Chief upon the subject, finds that there will be no objection to this arrangement.

Columbia to Captn Luard.
