The Crown Agents for the Colonies have this day
received from the Colonial Secretary of
British Columbia
a letter, of which I enclose a copy, directing them, under
certain circumstances, to draw a Bill on the Government
of the Colony in order to raise the sum of £6250 to
meet the interest and sinking fund payments on the
British Columbia Loans due on the
1st proximo.
Before taking any further steps in the matter
the Crown Agents will be glad to know whether there
is any chance of their receiving from the Imperial
Exchequer the sum of £9000 therein stated to be due to
the Colony by the Home Government.
The cash balance now in the hands of the Crown Agents
is £9537, but two bills, amounting together to £10,000,
were drawn on them by the Colonial Authorities
on on the
16th March last, and will mature, and must be paid,
on the
16th proximo. The additional sum required
therefore between the
1st and 16th July will be
£6713; and failing the
early payment from Her Majesty's Treasury of the £9000 due on
Military account, the Crown Agents request the authority of
Mr
Secretary Cardwell to draw Bills on the Colonial
Government sufficient to raise the required amount.
