Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch of the 17th April, Separate, addressed to my Predecessor respecting the amount of salary and allowances which for the future should in your opinion be assigned to the governor of British Columbia. I concurentirelyManuscript image entirely in the opinion which you express of the inexpediency or rather impossibility in the present financial condition of British Columbia of moving for any increase to your salary beyond the £4,000 a year, at which it is now fixed.
In speaking of an allowance for travelling not exceeding One thousand pounds per annum, Lord Carnarvon of course contemplated that the allowance on that account should not exceed a fair equivalent for the expenses actually incurredbyManuscript image by the governor in travelling.
