Sir,
I have received from the Colonial Committee of the Church of Scotland a Memorial, copy of which is enclosed praying for a grant of land in Vancouver Island for the benefit of the Scotch Church established there and I have also received from Mr. DundasaManuscript image a letter addressed to the Earl of Zetland by the Presbyterian community of Victoria urging the same request. In reply I have caused the Memorialists to be informed that the grant of land to the English Church to which they refer was made by the Hudson's Bay Company, and not by the Crown, that it is not the practice of the Crown to make such grants, and that under these circumstances I am unable to comply with the prayer of their Memorials.
