No. 91
Victoria
5th August 1868
My Lord Duke,
I have the honor to enclose a letter of the 3rd June
addressed to the Colonial Secretary by the Crown Agents
complaining of an insufficient remittanceof of money and stating
their opinion that the Credit of the Colony must suffer thereby.
2. I add a minute by Mr Young showing the accounts which
under my direction he has transmitted during the last twelve
months. It certainly does not appear to me to leave much ground
for complaint on the part of the Crown Agents. Could Your Grace
but see the condition of the Streets, Roads and Bridges ofNewNew
Westminster and Victoria I think that you would arrive at the
conclusion that we are making considerable sacrifices to keep up
the Public Credit.
I have the honor to be,
My Lord Duke,
Your Grace's most obedient,
humble Servant. Frederick Seymour
Minutes by CO staff
Mr Elliot B. Columbia has mended its way in regard to remittances since
the Duke of Buckingham's despatch was written—previously as you
will remember they had been much behind even in sending money
to pay the interest on their Debentures. However send a copy to
the Crown Agents but for information only.
Duke of Buckingham
There has been no answer from the Ty. I should conclude that
they considered the matter was set at rest by Your Grace's
despatch of the 13 July a copy of which was sent to them (31
July) for information.
