I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to
send you herewith, for the information of His Grace the Duke of
Buckingham, Extracts of a Letter from Rear Admiral Hastings,
dated the 30th Septr, No 175, reporting his
proceedings in ascending the Frazer River, and the Road to the
Gold Diggings of Cariboo in British Columbia, and pointing out
the great difficulty there would be in sending any Body of Men
from Her Majestys

Adml Hastings is of the opinion that it wd occupy one
month to march 100 men from Yale to Cariboo, & that the
Commissariat would have [to] start a fortnight in advance.
I believe the distance is almost 500 miles.
