I have had the honor to receive Your Grace's despatch N
o 101
of
of the
30th November enclosing a report from
Admiral
Hastings Commanding the Pacific Squadron, of a visit to the
Interior of the Colony and the great difficulty which would
attend the transport of an armed force to
Cariboo.
2. Nobody is
more more aware than I of the difficulty which would
attend a naval or military interference with the miners in that
distant region; and when pressed by the local magistrate for an
armed force in
1867 I proceeded in person to the
scene scene of
disturbance, and made no application for assistance to
Admiral Hastings.
3. I sincerely trust that all is quiet now in the gold districts.
