Torrens to Granville
Bath and Cheltenham Hotel
London Street, Paddington
May 21st 1869 The Right Honble The Earl Granville K.G. Secretary of State for the Colonies

My Lord,
The Imperial Act of Union of the Colonies of British Columbia and Vancouver Island having led to a reduction involving the loss of my Appointment as Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of the latter Colony, I have for the last two years been an applicant for, but have not I regret to say been successful in obtaining, employment under the Colonial Office.
Under these circumstances it has been necessary for me to seek for occupation elsewhere.
Within the last few days I have been elected Chief Constable of the Borough of Salford, subject to confirmation of the election by the General Council of the Corporation at a meeting to be holden on Wednesday next.
My hands will be strengthened by obtaining from the Colonial Department permission to referManuscript image to them as to the manner in which my Colonial duties were performed.
This reference the Testimonials I have had the honor of forwarding to the Colonial Office, Your Lordship will I trust be of opinion, justify my asking.
His Excellency Governor Seymour in a Despatch stating to His Grace the late Secretary of State for the Colonies the circumstances under which I and others lost our Appointments was pleased to make very favorable mention of my name.
I have the honor to be,
My Lord,
Your most obedient Servant
R.W. Torrens

Sir F. Sandford
See from Govr 25 Feb. 1867—3714. Also 4535, 7784 & 11738/67.
He might have an extract, as I have marked, of the Governor's dispatch. I think would be enough—that is that we had better not commit ourselves to more.
