Taylor writes to Newcastle to forward a letter from Easterby, a letter that proposes “three gentlemen” as partners in Easterby’s proposed grant to mine land on “Queen Charlotte's Island;” further, Taylor adds, on behalf of his “Firm,” a list of names to be “inserted in the Lease.”
In the minutes, Blackwood presumes that the gentlemen proposed to join Easterby’s “mining Schemes” are of a respectable sort, and Newcastle asks to direct the land board to prepare a draft lease.
Three documents are enclosed with this correspondence. The first is a letter, from
Easterby to Taylor, that forwards the names of three gentlemen to become joint lessees; the second is
a draft letter, from the Colonial Office to the Emigration Commissioners, that forwards
copies of correspondence on and related to Easterby’s scheme, and asks that a draft lease be prepared; and the third is a draft letter,
from the Colonial Office to Taylor, that advises that a grant will not be granted.
Taylor to Newcastle
I have now the honor to hand your Grace the accompanying letter
from Mr Anthony Easterby proposing the names of three gentlemen to be
joined to those of himself and partners in the grant of Mining ground in
Queen Charlotte's Island should the Government be pleased to accede to
the application which has been made on their behalf.

I beg to add, on the part of my Firm, that we are enabled to
testify to the high respectability of these gentlemen: and we now
therefore propose to your Grace the following names as those to be
inserted in the Lease.
