Abstract
Despatch from London.
Labouchere commends Douglas for his “measures” taken in “freeing the Settlement from the Northern Indians.” He
also relates his satisfaction with Douglas’s speech at the legislature on 12 August 1856. Regarding Douglas’s concerns about a committee to investigate the disputed election, Labouchere is confident that the “difficulty will have been removed before the receipt of this
despatch.”

Sir,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No 19 of the
20th of August.
The Measures which you adopted for freeing the
Settlement from the Northern Indians appear to have been judicious, and
to have
answered the object you had in view. I have read with
satisfaction the speech with which you opened the Session of the
Legislature on the 12th August. With respect to the difficulty you
experienced in constituting a Committee to inquire into the validity of
the disputed Elections, it is probable that that difficulty will have
been removed before the receipt of this despatch.
