Smith to Under-Secretary of State
Hudson's Bay House
March 3rd 1858
Sir,
I am directed by the Governor and Committee of the Hudson’s Bay Company to acknowledge
the receipt of
Mr Merivale’s letter of the
25th Instant transmitting for the information of the Company a copy of a Despatch from H M Minister
at Washington relative to the rumoured intention of the Mormons to emigrate to the
Company’s Territory.
In expressing the thanks of the Directors of the Hudson’s Bay Company for the communication
I am instructed to forward for the information of
Lord Stanley the accompanying Extract of a letter bearing upon this subject
recently recently received from
Sir George Simpson.
I have the honour to be Sir,
Your most obedient Servant
W.G. Smith
Secretary
The Under Secretary of State
Colonial Office
Minutes by CO staff
Mr Merivale
The enclosure adds nothing to the information derived from general sources. Put by?
(Annex Mr Labouchere’s despatch to Gov. Douglas, which Lord Carnarvon and Lord Stanley
will probably like to peruse).
I never supposed they would go to the Sas Katchewan, but an attempt to occupy the
Fraser's River Valley is also equally improbable.

Simpson to
Smith dated Hudson's Bay House, Lachine,
