Sir,
I have laid before the Secretary of State for War your letter of the 22nd instant with it's enclosure from the Governor of Vancouver's Island, relating to the party which has been dispatched from this country to Survey the Boundary between the British and American Possessions along the 49th Parallel of North Latitude. With regard to Governor Douglas' suggestion that the party should be increased, I am to request that you will acquaint Lord Stanley that this has been doneManuscript imagedone by anticipation as subsequently to the date of the letter to which he (Governor Douglas) refers, it had been determined to send Fifty Sappers exclusive of NoncCommissioned officers, instead of Thirty.

It will be sufficient, I think, to observe to the Govr. in ansr. to his despt. that H.M. Govt. have anticipated his apprehensions as to the insufficiency of the Engineer party for the work to be performed, & have despatched the number now mentioned.
