I have laid before the Secretary of State for War your letter of the
22nd instant with it's enclosure from the Governor of
Vancouver's Island, relating to the party which has been dispatched from this country to Survey the
Boundary between the British and American Possessions along the 49
th Parallel of North Latitude. With regard to
Governor Douglas' suggestion that the party should be increased, I am to request that you will acquaint
Lord Stanley that this has been
donedone by anticipation as subsequently to the date of the letter to which he (Governor
Douglas) refers, it had been determined to send Fifty Sappers exclusive of NoncCommissioned
officers, instead of Thirty.
