I have to acknowledge the receipt of your [VI] Despatch No. 33
of the 13th of August last, enclosing copies of your correspondence
with the House of Assembly from the 16th July, to the
10th of August.
I have read with great regret the painful disclosures as to the
state of the Prison in
Vancouver's Island which are contained in the
report of the Committee appointed to enquire into that subject, and I
earnestly hope that through your energy and the favorable disposition
of the Assembly measures will not only
be proposed but carried out to remedy so great an evil.
