I have laid before Lord John Russell your Letter to Mr Hammond of
the 18th instant inclosing copies of a correspondence between the
Governor of British Columbia and Colonel Moody respecting the Joint
military occupation of San Juan; and I am, in reply, to request that
you will convey to His Grace The Duke of Newcastle, Lord John Russell's thanks for the communication of these Papers.

I should not myself recommend an acknowledgement of the receipt of
