With reference to your letter of the 
13th May 1859 and subsequent
               correspondence relating to the advances to be made by the Imperial
               Government for the erection of the Lighthouses in 
Fucas Straits and
               
Esquimalt Harbour, 
Vancouver's Island, I am directed by the Lords of
               the Committee of Privy Council for Trade to transmit to you the
               enclosed statement of the sums expensed in this Country and of the
               sums advanced to the Government of 
Vancouvers Island on account of
               the Works of these Lighthouses amounting to Twelve thousand four
hundred
               hundred and ninety three pounds, nineteen shillings and nine pence
               (£12,493,19.9).  As these advances have been made by the Imperial
               Government on condition that one half of the sum advanced should be
               repaid by the Colonies of 
British Columbia and 
Vancouvers Island
               jointly, I am to request that you will move His Grace the 
Duke of
                  Newcastle, to forward the enclosed statement to the Governor of
               
Vancouvers Island and to request the Governor to cause the half of
               the sum advanced viz: Six thousand two hundred and forty six pounds
               nineteen shillings and ten pence to be paid to Her Majesty's
               Paymaster General.
