Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 9 of the 3rd of April reporting that you had granted leave of absence for 6 months to Mr. Pemberton, the Surveyor General of Vancouver Island, to enable him to proceed toEnglandManuscript image England to superintend the construction of certain Machinery to be imployed in the improvement of Victoria Harbour.[???]
I acquiesce in this arrangement but Mr. Pemberton cannot be allowed to draw full Salary for a greater period than six months after his departure from the Colony on the 3rd of April.
