Sir
I have the honor to inform you that consequent upon the resignation
of Mr J.D. Pemberton, Surveyor General, and the appointment of Mr
B.W. Pearse as his acting successor, I have selected Mr J.T. Tidwell
to perform the duties of Assistant Surveyor in the room of Mr
Pearse.
Mr Pidwell is an active intelligent Colonist, fully competent to
perform the duties assigned to him.
He
He has hitherto given much of his time gratuitously to the public
service and is irreproachable in private character.
I have to solicit your approval of this temporary arrangement.

Mr Cardwell's decision has to be pronounced 1ly on the question as to the confirmation of Mr Pearse to succeed Mr Pemberton as Surveyor General, and 2y on the immediate question submitted in this despatch viz: as to the succession of Mr Tidwell [Pidwell] to Mr Pearse's place.
