I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 100 of the 3rd December reporting the circumstances under which you had accepted the resignation of Mr. Horace Smith of his Office of Commissioner of Police in Vancouver Island.

I approve the course you have adopted with regard to Mr. Smith, and I learn with satisfaction from your Despatch that you are taking vigorous measures to eradicate abuse, and to establish a sound and satisfactory administration of the Police.
