No. 82, Separate
20th October 1866
My Lord,
On a careful consideration of all the circumstances attending my relinquishing this Government, and Mr Seymours assumption of that of both Colonies, I have come to the decision that public interests and Mr Seymour's private convenience will bebestManuscript image best consulted by my taking my departure before he arrives. In consequence of the infrequent communication between San Francisco and this Colony there will be an interval of 10 or 15 days during which Mr Young the Colonial Secretary will administer this Government.
I propose therefore to hand over the Government to Mr Young and take my departure from this Colony by the Mail SteamerwhichManuscript image which sails on the 23rd instant.
Mr Seymour having sailed from England on the 17th September, we shall probably meet at San Francisco.
Trusting that Your Lordship will approve of the course I have thought it best to adopt.
I have the honor to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient Servant
