Dundas spent two years during the mid 1840s as a Royal Navy officer in the Hudson’s
Bay Company territory on the Pacific Slope, based in
Fort Vancouver. In 1848, after his return to
London, he wrote a letter attacking the management of the HBC in the area, and claimed that
the company’s
whole system … would be wholly, and totally inapplicable to the nursing of a young
Colony.
