Mayer was a German Immigrant who owned 100 acres of land near 
Miner’s Bay on 
Mayne Island. In 1863, he made an agreement with his friend 
Frederick Marks to work the farm together. While moving to 
Mayne Island, 
Marks and his eldest daughter were murdered. Mayer went searching for them and reported
                     them missing to British authorities in 
Victoria. On April 13 he provided 
this statement of the events to 
A.F. Pemberton.
