The description
Snowy Mountain in Rae's Pass
appears on this 1857 map by
McKay. Based on this map, it appears they may have been considering naming one of the peaks
in the region “Mount Rae” or “Snowy Mountain”. No mountains in the region currently
bear the name; however, there are still sixteen unnamed peaks above 9,800 feet in
the nearby Premier range.
1 McKay and company may have been referring to one of these. It is also possible that, viewed
from below, a section of the range appeared as a single massif, and that “Mount Rae”
and “Snowy Mountain” refer to several summits.
