Winnipeg is the capital city of Manitoba; it incorporated in
1873 with a population of around 3700.
1 It is roughly 100 km north of the Minnesota border.
2 The area covered by today's city supported European fur-trade interests as early
as
1738, with the building of Fort Rouge and, later, the
Red River Settlement.
3
Winnipeg derives from the Cree word “win-nipi”, or “murky water”, likely in reference
to the
Red and Assiniboine Rivers that intersect at the heart of the city.
