<p style="font-style: italic;">This document contains mentions of Indigenous Peoples. The authors of these documents often perpetuate a negative perspective of Indigenous Peoples and it is important to look critically at these mentions. <p><persName ref="prs:berens_hh">Berens</persName> acknowledges <persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Carnarvon</persName>’s letter and has informed his <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> colleagues that the British Government intends to <q>revoke the right of exclusive trade with the Indians […] within the Colony of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.</q></p>

<p>The minutes agree that a <q>ready compliance</q> by the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> <q>without allusion to compensation</q> will be <q>very satisfactory.</q></p>

<p>Enclosed is an extract from <persName ref="prs:smith_wg">Smith</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> informing that the Company’s exclusive license to trade is being terminated.</p>

<p>I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of the <persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Earl of Carnarvon</persName>s letter of the 5<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Instant, in compliance with which, I have announced to my coleagues in the Direction the intention of Her Majesty's government to revoke the right of exclusive trade with <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indians</name>, which was given to the Company in the Royal Licence of the <date when="1838-05-30">30<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of May 1838</date>, over so much of the Territory in question as is comprised within the Colony of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.</p>

<p>I have also the honour of enclosing an extract of a letter addressed to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> under date, the <date when="1858-07-16">16<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of July last</date>, from which you will perceive that the <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">wishes</fw><pb facs="co_6_26/co_6_26_00465v.jpg"/>wishes of Her Majesty's government upon this point have already been anticipated to a certain extent by the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName>, in a manner which you will doubtless approve.</p>
