<p>The <persName ref="prs:canterbury">Bishop of Canterbury</persName> informs <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Lytton</persName> that <persName ref="prs:burdett-coutts_ag">Angela Burdett-Coutts</persName> has <q>empowered</q> the Bishop with £15,000 to promote Christianity in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> and to appoint a bishop to <q>superintend the religious interest</q> of the colony.</p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft from the CO to the <persName ref="prs:canterbury">Archbishop of Canterbury</persName> offering the complete support of the government to <persName ref="prs:burdett-coutts_ag">Burdett-Coutts</persName>’s offer; and a draft from <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Lytton</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> informing him of <persName ref="prs:burdett-coutts_ag">Burdett-Coutts</persName>’s <q>magnificent endowment.</q></p>

I have the honor to acquaint you that in consequence of the
<index><term><persName ref="prs:canterbury">Canterbury, Archibishop</persName> of</term><index><term>recommends establishment of bishoprick</term></index></index>
importance that is likely to belong to the colony of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">New Columbia</placeName>, &amp; the
expediency of providing for the spiritual instruction of the population
assembling there, <persName ref="prs:burdett-coutts_ag">Miss Burdett Coutts</persName> has empowered me to propose the

appointment of a bishop there, who may take the oversight of the Clergy &amp;
superintend the religious interest of the<pb facs="co_60_02/co_60_02_00606v.jpg"/> country &amp; people; and for that
purpose she is prepared to furnish an endowment of the See, to the amount
of £15,000.

I am in hopes that Her Majesty's Government may consider
this so desirable a measure, as to consent to the creation of
