The Bishop of Canterbury informs Lytton that Angela Burdett-Coutts has empowered the Bishop with £15,000 to promote Christianity in British Columbia and to appoint a bishop to superintend the religious interest of the colony.

Enclosed is a draft from the CO to the Archbishop of Canterbury offering the complete support of the government to Burdett-Coutts’s offer; and a draft from Lytton to Douglas informing him of Burdett-Coutts’s magnificent endowment.

I have the honor to acquaint you that in consequence of the Canterbury, Archibishop ofrecommends establishment of bishoprick importance that is likely to belong to the colony of New Columbia, & the expediency of providing for the spiritual instruction of the population assembling there, Miss Burdett Coutts has empowered me to propose the Coutts, Angela Burdett.see Burdett-Coutts Burdett-Coutts endowmentofSeeofColumbia Church of Englandendowment of See of Columbia appointment of a bishop there, who may take the oversight of the Clergy & superintend the religious interest of the country & people; and for that purpose she is prepared to furnish an endowment of the See, to the amount of £15,000.

I am in hopes that Her Majesty's Government may consider this so desirable a measure, as to consent to the creation of the See; & have the honour to be, Sir,
