<p>The minutes approve this appointment and make arrangements for <persName ref="prs:hamley_wo">Hamley</persName>’s departure on the <name ref="vsl:thames" type="vessel">Thames City</name>.</p>

<p>Enclosed is <persName ref="prs:rogers_f">Rogers</persName> to <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> relaying <persName ref="prs:walcott_s">Walcott</persName>’s high opinion of <persName ref="prs:hamley_wo">Hamley</persName>’s work, expressed verbally to <persName ref="prs:rogers_f">Rogers</persName>; a draft from <persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Carnarvon</persName> to <persName ref="prs:hamley_wo">Hamley</persName> confirming his appointment at a salary of £400 a year and advising passage would be provided on the <name ref="vsl:thames" type="vessel">Thames City</name>; <persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Carnarvon</persName> to the Secretary to the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> requesting passage for <persName ref="prs:hamley_wo">Hamley</persName> on the <name ref="vsl:thames" type="vessel">Thames City</name>.</p>

have the great kindness to offer it to me I will gratefully accept it.
I would not think of<pb facs="co_60_03/co_60_03_00143v.jpg"/> doing so if I felt doubtful of being able to
discharge the duties, but besides the determination to carry out the
instructions I might receive I cannot be altogether unprepared after so
long an apprenticeship at this office where questions respecting shipping
&amp; accounts<pb facs="co_60_03/co_60_03_00144r.jpg"/> daily arise.

Collector of Customs at <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B. Columbia</placeName> (Is it to be in combination
with a similar office at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">V. Couver's Island</placeName>—or should that point
be left to future events to decide?) on <persName ref="prs:hamley_wo">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Hamley</persName>.
</ab>
<p>
For the sake of convenience in our records I will mention that<pb facs="co_60_03/co_60_03_00149v.jpg"/> this
gentleman has been for many years in the Land and Emigration
Office, and, as I understand, <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir Edward</persName>, <persName ref="prs:murdoch_twc">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Murdoch</persName>—Chairman of
that Board—is of opinion that he is qualified for the apptment.
</p>
<p>
I suppose an official Letter <choice><abbr>sh<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>should</expan></choice> be addressed to <persName ref="prs:hamley_wo">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Hamley</persName>
telling him of this decision in his favor.
</p>
<p>
If we cannot get him a passage in the "<name ref="vsl:thames" type="vessel">Thames City</name>" freight-ship<pb facs="co_60_03/co_60_03_00150r.jpg"/> he
must have the usual allowance of passage money.

the post of Revenue Officer—but <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir Edward</persName> is of opinion that this
gentleman is probably an adherent of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName>—<pb facs="co_60_03/co_60_03_00150v.jpg"/>and that
as he has intimated to the Governor that a Collector of Customs would be
