<p><persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> transmits a couple reports from <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Moody</persName> on the <q>disturbances</q> at <placeName ref="plc:yale">Fort Yale</placeName> and surrounding area. <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> declares <q>quietness now prevails</q> and thanks <persName ref="prs:prevost_jc">Captain Prevost</persName> and <persName ref="prs:richards_gh">Captain Richards</persName> for their naval assistance in the <q>suppression</q> of unlawful miners.</p>

<p>The minutes hope that <persName ref="prs:mcgowan_e">McGowan</persName> will be punished.</p>

<p>Included with this document is a draft from <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> to Secretary to the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName>, <date when="1859-04-11">11 April 1859</date>, forwarding copy of the despatch for information; <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Moody</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>, <date when="1859-01-17">17 January 1859</date>, regarding the summons issued to <persName ref="prs:mcgowan_e">Edward McGowan</persName> at <placeName ref="plc:hills_bar">Hills Bar</placeName>; and <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Moody</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>, <date when="1859-01-22">22 January 1859</date>, reporting quiet had been restored at <placeName ref="plc:yale">Fort Yale</placeName>.</p>

<p>
I have the honor of transmitting for your information the
copy of a letter from the Lieutenant Governor dated, <placeName ref="plc:yale">Fort Yale</placeName>
<date when="1859-01-17">17<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> January</date>, to which allusion was made in my Despatch <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></fw><pb facs="co_60_04/co_60_04_00102v.jpg"/>N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi>
80, of the <date when="1859-01-22">22<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">nd</hi> January last</date>, and which could not, for want
of time, be got ready to foward by the same conveyance.
</p>
<p>
2. The copy of a subsequent communication from the
Lieutenant Governor dated <placeName ref="plc:langley">Langley</placeName>, <date when="1859-01-22">22 January</date> is also herewith
forwarded, reporting that the authority of the Law has been
maintained, and that quietness now prevails among all classes
at <placeName ref="plc:yale">Fort Yale</placeName> and in the neighbourhood.
</p>
<p>
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">The</fw><pb facs="co_60_04/co_60_04_00103r.jpg"/>3. The Lieutenant Governor had however considered it
prudent to leave the Detachment of Royal Marines under
<persName ref="prs:jones_hs">Lieutenant Howard S. Jones</persName> for a week longer, to aid and
support the Chief Inspector of Police. He brought back the Royal
Engineers to <placeName ref="plc:langley">Langley</placeName>, and also the Seamen, who rejoined Her
Majesty's Ship <name ref="vsl:plumper" type="vessel">Plumper</name> at that place.
</p>
<p>
4. The Lieutenant Governor and <persName ref="prs:begbie_mb">Judge Begbie</persName> returned to
this place a few days ago by the <name ref="vsl:plumper" type="vessel">Plumper</name>, and the former <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">proposes</fw><pb facs="co_60_04/co_60_04_00103v.jpg"/>proposes
to address me a special Report upon the subject of the last
disturbance at <placeName ref="plc:yale">Yale</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
5. I gratefully acknowledge the prompt and zealous
co-operation of <persName ref="prs:prevost_jc">Captain Prevost</persName>, the Senior Naval Officer,
in furnishing a force for the suppression of those disturbances,
and of <persName ref="prs:richards_gh">Captain Richards</persName> who commanded the Naval Force and
despatched it from <placeName ref="plc:langley">Fort Langley</placeName> to the support of the Lieutenant
Governor, who notices with especial commendation the services
of <persName ref="prs:mayne_rc">Lieutenant R.C. Mayne</persName> R.N. and of <persName ref="prs:ogilvie">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Ogilvie</persName> of the
Hudson's Bay <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Company's</fw><pb facs="co_60_04/co_60_04_00103v.jpg"/>Company's service.
