Douglas reports that he will use an amended form for the sale of Crown lands which omits reservations for timber and minerals because such reservations only excite odium and clamour, without producing any compensatory advantage.

11 April 1859 Sir,

I have duly received your Despatch of the 20th January last No 6, conveying to me your approval of two Proclamations and a notice I had issued prohibiting the introduction of Spirituous liquors among the Natives, and continuing Purchases against the fraudulent sales of Crown lands, andand also, with reference to a Form of Grant I had forwarded to you, transmitting to me an amended Form which you consider sufficient for all purposes.

2. This amended Form shall be brought into immediate use in all Sales of Crown lands, and I observe with much satisfaction that all reservations of Timber, Minerals, the baser Metals, and Coal are omitted; for such reservations only excite odium and clamour, without producing any compensatory advantage.
