<p>
I have the honor to forward for your Grace's information
the Copy of a Report which I lately received from <persName ref="prs:downie">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> William
Downie</persName>, the same enterprising person who last winter furnished
a report, also forwarded with my Despatch N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 123 of the <date when="1859-03-25">25<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
of March last</date>, on <placeName ref="plc:jervis_inlet">Jarvis' Inlet</placeName>.
</p>
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">The</fw>
<pb facs="co_60_05/co_60_05_00223v.jpg"/>
<p>
2. The report now transmitted relates to the unsuccessful
result of the attempt made in the month of <date when="1859-07">July last</date>, by a body
of miners from this place, to explore <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Queen Charlotte's Island</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
3. The adventurers, dismayed by the rugged aspect of the
Country, the humidity of the climate, and the numbers and
formidable appearance of <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Native Tribes</name>, did not prosecute
the enterprise with resolution or tenacity, and soon returned to
this place, with the exception of a few daring spirits, who
accompanied <persName ref="prs:downie">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Downie</persName> to <placeName ref="plc:lax_kwalaams">Fort Simpson</placeName>, and there made arrangement
to explore the course of <placeName ref="plc:skeena_river">Skeena River</placeName>, which flows into the sea
at <placeName ref="plc:port_essington">Port Essington</placeName>, North Latitude 54<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 15.
</p>
<pb facs="co_60_05/co_60_05_00224r.jpg"/>
<p>
4. The party commenced the ascent of the <placeName ref="plc:skeena_river">Skeena</placeName> in a canoe,
which they managed to take on as far as <placeName ref="plc:lytton">the Forks</placeName>, a distance
of 110 miles from the Sea. The River ceases to be navigable
at that point, in consequence it is supposed of Falls and
dangerous rapids; and they had to leave the canoe, and to travel
55 miles by land to <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indian Village of "<placeName ref="plc:naas_glee">Naas Glee</placeName>"</name><!--LILS I don't know if these should be marked as groups -->, <name type="ip" subtype="group">a celebrated native fishing station</name>, from whence <placeName ref="plc:skeena_river">the Skeena</placeName> again
becomes navigable to its source in "<placeName ref="plc:babine_lake">Babine Lake</placeName>", fifteen
miles beyond "<placeName ref="plc:naas_glee">Naas Glee</placeName>".
</p>
<p>
5. <placeName ref="plc:babine_lake">Babine Lake</placeName> is a broad and extensive sheet of water
nearly 90 miles in length, with depth sufficient for vessels
of the largest class; and is <!-- KSS note: catchword cut off, appears to be "separated" --><pb facs="co_60_05/co_60_05_00224v.jpg"/>separated by a low table-land 13
miles in breadth from <placeName ref="plc:stuart_lake">Stuarts Lake</placeName>, a feeder of <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Fraser's River</placeName>,
not quite so large as <placeName ref="plc:babine_lake">Babine Lake</placeName>, but otherwise equally well
adapted for the purposes of navigation.
</p>
<p>
6. The Report closes with the arrival of <persName ref="prs:downie">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Downie</persName> and
party, after much suffering and privation, at <placeName ref="plc:fort_saint_james">Fort St. James</placeName>,
<placeName ref="plc:stuart_lake">Stuart's Lake</placeName>; when their wants were generously relieved, and
themselves hospitably entertained, by the officers of the
<orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName>.
</p>
<p>
7. <persName ref="prs:downie">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Downie</persName> made several important discoveries in course
of his adventurous journey. He found gold in small quantities on
the <!-- KSS note: catchword cut off, appears to be "Skeena" --><pb facs="co_60_05/co_60_05_00225r.jpg"/><placeName ref="plc:skeena_river">Skeena River</placeName>; and the mountains, which he had not time to
explore, appeared to be of the formation containing gold; he
also saw very valuable and extensive beds of coal. He moreover
found gold on <placeName ref="plc:stuart_lake">Stuarts Lake</placeName>. He describes the country between
<placeName ref="plc:lytton">the Forks</placeName> and "<placeName ref="plc:naas_glee">Naas Glee</placeName>" as being well adapted for farming,
and suitable for the construction of roads. The whole distance
from <placeName ref="plc:babine_lake">Babine Lake</placeName> to the Sea does not appear to exceed 180
miles, a great part of which is accessible by water.
</p>
<p>
8. The valley of the <placeName ref="plc:skeena_river">Skeena</placeName> is thus shewn to be an available
avenue into the interior of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>, and will, I have
no doubt, soon become a most <pb facs="co_60_05/co_60_05_00225v.jpg"/>important outlet for the upper
Districts of <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Fraser's River</placeName>; which, from the course of the River
and the direction of the Coast, are brought in close proximity
with the sea.
</p>
<p>
9. As a means of supplying the distant mining Districts of
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> by a shorter and cheaper route than the valley
of <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Fraser's River</placeName>, its importance will soon be appreciated, and
attract the attention of the mining and commercial classes; and
I believe that the day is not far distant when Steamers will be
busily plying on the waters of the two great inland Lakes.
</p>
<p>
10. It appears from the <pb facs="co_60_05/co_60_05_00226r.jpg"/>American papers published in <placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington Territory</placeName>, that rich gold diggings have been very lately found by
the men of the United States Boundary Commission on the <placeName ref="plc:similkameen_river">Shimilcomeen
River</placeName>, and we shall have to turn our attention immediately to that
quarter, as the greater part of the <placeName ref="plc:similkameen_valley">Shimilcomeen Valley</placeName> lies north
of the 49<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> parallel of latitude, and within the limits of this
Colony.
</p>
<p>
11. The enclosed clipping from the "Pioneer and Democrat" of
the <date when="1859-11-04">4<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of November instant</date> contains all the information we
have yet received relative to that discovery.
