<p><persName ref="prs:romaine_wg">Romaine</persName> forwards <q>an extract of a letter</q> to <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> on the <q>state of affairs in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.</q></p>

<p>The minutes note that <q>Californian Miners</q> have returned to <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName> for the winter and <persName ref="prs:baynes_rl">Admiral Baynes</persName> has reported that none of the <q>bars</q> can be mined until <q>the next irruption [sic] in the spring.</q></p>

<p>Enclosed is an extract from <persName ref="prs:baynes_rl">Baynes</persName> to the Secretary of the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> reporting his arrival at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> and the current state of affairs on the Pacific station.</p>
