<p><persName ref="prs:corry_htl">Corry</persName> reports that the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> has no objections to the appointment of <persName ref="prs:young_wag">Young</persName> as Colonial Secretary of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.</p>

<p>The minutes discuss <persName ref="prs:young_wag">Young</persName>’s salary. <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Lytton</persName> decides that <persName ref="prs:young_wag">Young</persName> should be paid £500 from colonial revenues until <q>that Revenue increases.</q></p>

In reply to your letter of the <date when="1859-02-16">16<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Instant</date>, stating
the desire of Secretary <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir E. Bulwer Lytton</persName> to be informed
whether My Lord Commisioners of the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> would object
to the appointment of <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> William A.G. Young</persName>, Paymaster
R.N. as Colonial Secretary of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> in the
event of such an appointment being created; I am commanded

Now that the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> &amp; the <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">Foreign Office</orgName> both say that
they will spare <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Young</persName>, if the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> wishes to
confer the Office of Col: <choice><abbr>Se<choice><abbr>c<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi></abbr><expan>company</expan></choice></abbr><expan>Secretary</expan></choice> on him, it remains
for <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir E. Lytton</persName> to decide what salary he would recommend
<orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> to sanction for this Officer. The <pb facs="co_60_05/co_60_05_00284r.jpg"/>Salary will
appear I understand in the Parl<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi> Estimate for <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B. Columbia</placeName>.
Wherefore, and to keep up the same scale of salary
established for that Colony, I <choice><abbr>sh<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>should</expan></choice> conceive that about
£500 per ann: <choice><abbr>w<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>would</expan></choice> suffice. The <choice><abbr>Se<choice><abbr>c<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi></abbr><expan>company</expan></choice></abbr><expan>Secretary</expan></choice> performs
also the duties of Auditor or Accountant.
