Hamilton relates that the Treasury office must propose a parliamentary vote for so large a sum on account of British Columbia, for the sum of £42.998, and on the expectation that all future expenditure, on account of this Colony, will be defrayed from the local Revenue.

With reference to your letters of 26 April last and 7th Instant I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to acquaint you for the information of the Duke of Newcastle, that they regret the necessity of proposing a vote for so large a sum on account of British Columbia, but, under the circumstances represented, their Lordships will submit the Estimate toto Parliament for the sum of £42.998. as recommended by His Grace.

They trust that all future expenditure, on account of this Colony, will be defrayed from the local Revenue.
