<p>
I am directed by <persName ref="prs:peel_j">Secretary Major General Peel</persName> to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated <date when="1859-02-28">28<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Ultimo</date>,
transmitting the copy of a Despatch from the Governor of
Canada, with its enclosed Petition from <persName ref="prs:cole">Captain Cole</persName>,
commanding a Volunteer Cavalry Corps in Upper Canada, in which
he solicits permission to raise a force of one hundred Men
for service in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>—a proposal which you state
<persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir Edward Lytton</persName> sees no advantage in entertaining so far
as <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> is concerned, but <pb facs="co_60_06/co_60_06_00268v.jpg"/>which he thinks might
possibly be turned to account elsewhere.

<p>
In reply I am to request that you will acquaint <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir
Edward Bulwer Lytton</persName> that, stipulating as <persName ref="prs:cole">Captain Cole</persName> does
for conditions on behalf of himself and his men, far more
advantageous than those which have been granted to the Officers
and Men of the Royal Engineers who have proceeded to <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British

terms which could in reason be proposed for securing the
services of <persName ref="prs:cole">Capt<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">n</hi> Cole</persName> and his Men would be accepted, to
render it worth while <pb facs="co_60_06/co_60_06_00269r.jpg"/>to instruct the Governor to make any
communication to him on the subject.
</p>
<p>
I am to add that it is open to the men to whom <persName ref="prs:cole">Captain
Cole</persName> refers as anxious to join the British Army, to present
themselves to the Recruiting Agent in Canada for the
