I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch, N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 69, of the <date when="1859-01-07">7<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> January</date>, reporting the arrival of the <persName ref="prs:crickmer_wb">Reverend W.B. Crickmer</persName> with a License from the <persName ref="prs:tait_ac">Bishop of London</persName> to fulfil the Office of Chaplain to the Residents in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.</p><!--<pb facs="co_398_01/co_398_01_00130r.jpg"/>-->

I have to acquaint you<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">that</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_07/rg7_g8c_07_00097v.jpg"/> that <persName ref="prs:crickmer_wb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Crickmer</persName> has not received from me any appointment as Chaplain. On the formation of the Civil Government in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>, the <orgName ref="org:society_pgfp">Society for the propagation of the Gospel</orgName> appointed the <persName ref="prs:gammage_j">Reverend J. Gammage</persName> to officiate there and he was granted a passage to the Colony in the "<name ref="vsl:thames" type="vessel">Thames City</name>" which conveyed the Royal Engineers. Shortly afterwards the <orgName ref="org:ccss">Colonial Church Society</orgName> selected <persName ref="prs:crickmer_wb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Crickmer</persName> as their Missionary. Neither clergyman received any promise of
remuneration or other privileges, and I should regret if owing<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">to</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_07/rg7_g8c_07_00098r.jpg"/> to the terms of the Bishop's License you should assign to <persName ref="prs:crickmer_wb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Crickmer</persName> any Seniority<!--<pb facs="co_398_01/co_398_01_00130v.jpg"/>--> of position amongst the Clergy in the Colony.
</p>
<p>
I have applied to the <persName ref="prs:tait_ac">Bishop of London</persName> for information as to the
terms of the Credentials given to <persName ref="prs:gammage_j">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Gammage</persName> and <persName ref="prs:crickmer_wb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Crickmer</persName>, on
the receipt of which I shall address you further on this subject. In the
meantime I must instruct you that no permanent Ecclesiastical
arrangements can be made till they shall have received the sanction of
the <persName ref="prs:hills_g">Bishop<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">of</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_07/rg7_g8c_07_00098v.jpg"/> of British Columbia</persName> who may be expected shortly to arrive in
the Colony.
