Carnarvon acknowledges receipt of Douglas’ despatch from 19 February 1859 regarding attempts by Americans to occupy San Juan Island, and forwards a copy of correspondence from the Foreign Office with instructions to pursue the Earl of Malmesbury’s directions for maintaining the rights of the British Crown to the island.

Enclosed in the despatch (image missing) is Merivale to Hammond, 11 April 1859, regarding American activities on San Juan Island.

I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 19th of February reporting that attempts are being made by certain American citizens to survey and occupy the Island of San Juan in the Gulf of Georgia.

I enclose for your information and guidance the copy of a correspondencewith with the Foreign Office on this subject and I have to instruct you to pursue the course indicated by the Earl of Malmesbury for maintaining the rights of the British Crown to the Island.
