<p>
Having very recently completed a rather protracted journey
exceeding five weeks of almost constant travelling
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">in</fw>
<pb facs="co_60_08/co_60_08_00179v.jpg"/>
in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British
Columbia</placeName>, I regret that there is not time to communicate to
your Grace, by the Mail of this day, now about leaving for
<placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>, the result of my observations on the character
and prospects of that Colony.
</p>
<p>
2. On leaving <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> I proceeded by the Northern
Harrison
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">River</fw>
<pb facs="co_60_08/co_60_08_00180r.jpg"/>
River Road to "<placeName ref="plc:port_douglas">Douglas</placeName>" and from thence successively
visited <placeName ref="plc:lillooet">Cayoosh</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:lytton">Lytton</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:similkameen_valley">Shimilkomeen</placeName>, and <placeName ref="plc:rock_creek">Rock Creek</placeName>. On my
return I followed the mountain Road to <placeName ref="plc:hope">Hope</placeName>, and afterwards
paid a hasty visit to <placeName ref="plc:yale">Yale</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New Westminster</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
3. The lately discovered Gold District in <placeName ref="plc:similkameen_valley">Shimilkomeen</placeName> is,
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">for</fw>
<pb facs="co_60_08/co_60_08_00180v.jpg"/>
for the time being, attached to the <placeName ref="plc:hope">Hope</placeName> district, a course
which I was compelled to adopt for want of an efficient
officer at that time, to conduct the public business of the
new District.
</p>
<p>
4. The fame of the rich diggings discovered at <placeName ref="plc:rock_creek">Rock Creek</placeName>,
have drawn to that place chiefly from the State
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">of</fw>
<pb facs="co_60_08/co_60_08_00181r.jpg"/>
of Oregon,
upwards of five hundred Miners and persons engaged in other pursuits.
</p>
<p>
I therefore found it necessary to lose no time in making
arrangements to maintain the peace, and to protect the public
revenue by the appointment of a Magistrate and Gold Commissioner
for that District, together
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">with</fw>
<pb facs="co_60_08/co_60_08_00181v.jpg"/>
with other officers to enforce
the Customs Laws of the Colony, and that object was, I am
happy to say, effected without creating any dissatisfaction
among the foreign population there present.
</p>
<p>
5. I am further glad to report that peace and good order
exist everywhere within the Colony, and that a general and
marked feeling of confidence
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">is</fw>
<pb facs="co_60_08/co_60_08_00182r.jpg"/>
is exhibited by the resident
population in the resources of the Country.
</p>
<p>
6. I shall endeavour to prepare a report of my late
proceedings for your Grace's information, before the
departure of the next Mail.
