I have to acknowledge <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Merivale</persName>'s letter of <date when="1860-04-26">26<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
ultimo</date>, enclosing a Despatch from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> proposing
the reservations of some land in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> for the use
of certain of <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indians of that Colony</name>.
</p>
<p>
2. <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> encloses a correspondence which has
passed between <persName ref="prs:cridge">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cridge</persName>, the District Minister of <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>,
and <persName ref="prs:duncan_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Duncan</persName>, a

Gentleman who has devoted himself to the
work of <name type="ip" subtype="group">Christianizing the Indians</name>, from which it appears that
<persName ref="prs:duncan_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Duncan</persName> is anxious to obtain some land on which to locate
<name type="ip" subtype="group">the younger Members of the Tribe</name> who have been under his
instruction, in order that by separating them from <name type="ip" subtype="group">the older
Indians</name> they may be rescued from the danger of relapsing into
vicious habits. <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> in consequence proposes to
reserve several hundred acres of land for this purpose about
20 Miles South of <placeName ref="plc:lax_kwalaams">Fort Simpson</placeName> to be conveyed to the Governor of the Colony for the time being in trust for <name type="ip" subtype="group">the

Indians</name>, but not to be in any degree subject to their disposal.

<p>
3. This proposition appears to me well deserving of
approval, and I would recommend that it should receive the
sanction of the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName>.
