With reference to your Letters of the <date when="1859-03-10">10<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Sept<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></date>
last, and <date when="1860-03-22">22<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">nd</hi> Instant</date>, relative to a Claim preferred by
the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> for the repayment of £3.643.2.8 on account of
the passage to <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> in the Ship "<name ref="vsl:thames" type="vessel">Thames City</name>,"
of a Party of Royal Engineers, and of a Chaplain and his Wife,
and the Collector of Customs; I am directed by the <orgName ref="org:treasury">Lords
Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury</orgName>, to acquaint you,
for the information of the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName>, that pending the
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">consideration</fw>

consideration of this question, They have suspended the
transfer to the credit of Naval Services, of the amount of the Claim.
</p>
<p>
They presume that His Grace will Communicate His opinion
in regard to this charge, in which Their Lordships concur, to
the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty</orgName>, with a view to the
withdrawal
of the portion of the Claim relating to the Conveyance of Troops.
</p>
<p>
On being informed of the amount due to Naval Services in
respect of the Passages of the Chaplain and his wife (provided
that he is not a Military Chaplain) and of the Collector of
Customs, Their Lordships will direct the transfer thereof to the
Credit of Naval Services, from the Grant for <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.

I think the best way of letting the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> know the opinion
of the S. of State and of <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> on this matter will be
to send the Adm<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi> a copy of this correspondence, and
request that <choice><abbr>D<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></abbr><expan>Department</expan></choice> to state the charge incurred for the
Chaplain (who was not a Military man), his wife and the
Collector of Customs.
