and <persName ref="prs:mayne_rc">Mayne</persName> to a <q>Commission to represent the interests of the Colony of
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName></q> at <q>the International Exhibition to be held in London</q> in
<date when="1862">1862</date>, and offers a justification for his decision.

With reference to the correspondence and information
which I have had the honor to receive from Your Grace upon
the subject of the International Exhibition to be held in
<placeName ref="plc:london">London</placeName> during the forthcoming year, I have the honor to
communicate to you that I have appointed the Gentlemen
hereafter<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">named</fw><pb facs="co_60_11/co_60_11_00141v.jpg"/> named to form a Commission to represent the interests
of the Colony of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> at that Exhibition:

2. The qualifications of <persName ref="prs:lindley_j">D<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Lindley</persName> for this appointment are well known, and need no explanation from me. Of <persName ref="prs:mayne_rc">Commander Mayne</persName> I need only say that he has just returned to England upon
promotion, after a service of nearly four years in these Colonies
in Her Majesty's Surveying Ships <name ref="vsl:plumper" type="vessel">Plumper</name><fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">and</fw><pb facs="co_60_11/co_60_11_00142r.jpg"/> and <name ref="vsl:hecate" type="vessel">Hecate</name>, and that
this Colony is indebted to him for valuable information acquired
during certain exploring trips undertaken at my request.
