<persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName> acknowledges <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>'s despatch no. 3, dated <date when="1861-01-11">11 January 1861</date>,
and informs him that his recommendation regarding <q>the mode in which the [<orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>] should be compensated for any Land alienated by
the Government, which may be adjudged to have been the property of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Company</orgName> will not be lost sight of when the proper time arrives
for considering it.</q>

<p>I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 3 of the
<date when="1861-01-11">11<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of January</date> on the subject of the reference to the Judicial Committee of the title of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName> to the lands claimed by them in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.</p>

<p>Your recommendation as to the mode in which the Company should be compensated for any Land alienated by the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Government</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_09/rg7_g8c_09_00270v.jpg"/> Government, which may be adjudged to have been the property of the Company will not be lost sight of when the proper time arrives for considering it.</p>
