<p style="font-style: italic;">This document contains mentions of Indigenous Peoples. The authors of these documents often perpetuate a negative perspective of Indigenous Peoples and it is important to look critically at these mentions. They sometimes use terminology that is now considered hurtful and offensive. <persName ref="prs:romaine_wg">Romaine</persName> forwards <persName ref="prs:rogers_f">Rogers</persName> a letter from <persName ref="prs:maitland">Maitland</persName> on behalf of the
<orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName>. The letter describes <q>Indian Outrages</q> on the coast of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>
and points out <q>the necessity of a Military as well as a Naval Force being stationed at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.</q> The
minutes show that <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> staff believe it best to wait to hear from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> before making any decisions.

I am commanded by My <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty</orgName>
to send you herewith, for the information of Her Majesty's
Secretary of State for the Colonies, a Copy of a Letter from
<persName ref="prs:maitland">Rear Admiral Sir Tho<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">s</hi> Maitland</persName>, dated the <date when="1862-09-03">3<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> Sept</date>,
N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 264, relating to <name type="ip" subtype="group">Indian Outrages on the Coast of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName></name>, and pointing out the necessity of a Military as well
as a Naval Force being stationed at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.

The Enclosures from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> are not forwarded,
as<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">it</fw><pb facs="co_60_14/co_60_14_00026v.jpg"/> it is presumed that Copies of the Papers have already been
received at the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> from the Governor.

subject. As we have not heard from him on it we should
either ask the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> for copies of the documents to
wh<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi> they refer—or wait until we hear direct from the
Governor—which we shall doubtless soon do.

which we may expect from himself?
