to Officers who may retire from the Army for the purpose of settling in that Colony.</q> <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> minutes
that the answer can be found in <q>the Proclamation of the <date when="1861-03-18">18th of March 1861</date>.</q>

I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to transmit to you, for the consideration of the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName>, the enclosed copy
of a letter from <persName ref="prs:cochrane_s">Captain Cochrane</persName> in which he requests to be informed whether any and if so what advantages in the purchase of Land in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> are accorded to<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Officers</fw><pb facs="co_60_14/co_60_14_00326v.jpg"/> Officers who may retire from the Army for the purpose of settling
in that Colony.

which a copy will be found in the letter from this Department
to the <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName> dated the <date when="1861-12-20">20<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of Dec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> last</date>, and to
suggest that <persName ref="prs:cochrane_s">Capt. Cochrane</persName> should be answered in accordance
with the contents of that Proclamation.
