Mayne informs Newcastle that he has written a book based on his experiences as a surveyor aboard HMS Plumper and HMS Hecate titled Four Years in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>. The book will soon be published and Mayne asks that it be added to the library of the Colonial Office.

Since my return from Service in HM Ships Plumper and Hecate, employed in surveying the coasts of British Columbia and Vancouver Island, I have prepared for publication my journal kept during the four years I was there.

2. Having been employed, as your Grace has been informed by the official reports, on several exploring expeditions in the interior of both British Columbia & Vancouver Island, I am enabled to give my personal impressionof of this country, which I trust will be found useful.

3. I have the honor to submit my request that your Grace will be pleased to direct that this book may be added to the library of the Colonial Office.

4. The title of the book will be "Four Years in British Columbia and Vancouver Island" by Commr Mayne RN published by John Turney Albemarle Street.
